Parks and open spaces

Parks and Open Spaces includes not only matters concerning the town parks and formal gardens within the Association's membership area, but also footpaths and bridleways, and the provision and management of allotments.

This Section now incorporates our Woodlands pages.

It was announced in September that Hillingdon was the overall winner of the Large City category and retained its Silver Gilt award for the fourth year running in this year’s Britain in Bloom Awards.   Hillingdon Council's Breakspear Crematorium, Eastcote House Gardens and Poor's Field at Ruislip Lido all gained gold awards in their individual categories.   Poor's Field was also awarded the title of London Common of the Year.   A total of nine additional council owned parks and open spaces, including cemeteries, also received Silver Gilt or Silver awards over a number of categories.

In response to complaints from local residents, Hillingdon Council alerted Thames Water to fears that patches of waterlogged ground in Bessingby Park, Ruislip Manor, might be contaminated with raw sewage.

Thames Water told RRA, “It was a blocked manhole which was causing sewage to flood onto the field. We did the clean-up last weekend (8/9 September). The blockage has also been cleared.

"We're really sorry for the length of time it took to get this clean-up done", the spokeswoman added. "Due to the location of the manhole in the field, it was more difficult than anticipated to get the equipment on site."
