Hillingdon plan to begin charging for green waste collections from April

At tonight’s London Borough of Hillingdon Cabinet meeting, it was announced that LBH plan to begin charging for green waste (garden recycling) collection.

Their hope is to bring in charges for garden recycling collection from the start of April this year, after first putting the proposal out to consultation.  We will publicise the consultation here when it goes live, ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to respond to it.

What do we know so far?

There are no details of the consultation or charges available yet, but we will be keeping this website updated as details emerge.

We know so far that the council hope to save £2.5m from their budget from the charging scheme (from p10 of  the Budget Schedules).  Beyond this, all that has been announced so far is the recommendation presented to Cabinet this evening, to proceed with a consultation:

Recommendation 14 – Cabinet wishes to invite the views of residents on proposals to charge for the green waste collection service and is thereby recommending the commencement of a consultation exercise on the matter. It is proposed to delegated authority to the Cabinet Member for Community & Environment, in conjunction with the Cabinet Member for Finance & Transformation, to decide on the matter after duly considering the outcome of that consultation including any environment and equalities impact assessments required.

How much will it cost?

Neighbouring boroughs charge their residents between £69 (Harrow) and £100 (Barnet), so we might expect charges in Hillingdon to be along similar lines.
