Lady Bankes display and journal
Pupils from the school, along with groups from Whiteheath Juniors and Bishop Winnington Ingram, took part in the new schools’ section organised by the Ruislip Central Horticultural Society. This section was given the title “Presentation of the spring display they have been growing over the winter.” The event was held in The Great Barn on Sunday, March 30th and was very well attended.
Earlier in the school year Lady Bankes received everything they required to take part, which included a small wooden wheelbarrow, soil, crocus, dwarf tulip and daffodil bulbs. The children had been learning in the classroom about the life cycle of bulbs and how long different bulbs take to grow. With the guidance of Ms Juli Harris Powell, a Key Stage 1 Teaching Assistant, they produced a journal which included a stage by stage plan of their bulb journey. Consequently, the daffodil bulbs were planted at the bottom as they take longer to grow than the tulips and crocuses. Sadly the tulip bulbs were pulled out and destroyed by squirrels. To save some of the crocus bulbs they decided to plant them in stone pots and they survived to make a lovely display. Consequently, the only flowers displayed in their wheelbarrow were the daffodils. Nevertheless, the school was awarded second prize in their section and congratulated by the judges in a displayed message which read as follows: “Your diary is magnificent.”
